HCA (Current Workforce)

PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES TO REFRESH AND ENHANCE HCA SKILLS, TO DEVELOP THEM TO DELIVER A HIGHER LEVEL OF CLINICAL CARE AND TO ENABLE FURTHER CAREER PROGRESSION.

HCA enhanced training

Lewisham CEPN is developing a programme of enhanced training for HCAs, which will include the Care Certificate, a refresh of core skills, and enhanced clinical skills. The course will be available to all HCAs in Lewisham.  Details will be posted soon.

Nurse Associate Trainees

5 HCAs in Lewisham are undergoing training to become the first ever Nurse Associates in primary care in the UK. This pilot training is being run by University of Greenwich.

Nurse Associate is a new health care role introduced by the Department of Health. The role is designed to bridge the gap between HCAs and registered nurses, in order to:

  • provide a route into nursing and a career ladder for the HCA workforce
  • enhance the quality of care offered by the support workforce through defined and funded training and development
  • strengthen the support available to nursing staff, releasing them to focus on care planning and management, advancing their practice and using their high level skills.

We will keep you posted about the Lewisham HCAs’ progress and other similar opportunities.

What does the HCA skills training include?

This 3 hour course may be particularly useful for receptionists who are developing as HCAs, but will also be useful as a refresh for established HCAs, in order to practice the practical skills needed to deliver an effective NHS Health Check.
