UNDERGRADUATE NURSE (Future Workforce)RAISING THE PROFILE AND PROFESSIONAL BENEFITS OF PRACTICE NURSING AT THE TRAINING STAGE, SO THAT TRAINEES GO ON TO CHOSE IT AS A CAREER IN LEWISHAM.
WE TRAIN THEM, WE KEEP THEM.
How does the placement programme work?
Undergraduate nurses from Greenwich University and Kings College Hospital are allocated to practices for placements of varying timescales. They normally span between 2 weeks and a maximum of 12 weeks (the upper range for a 3rd year student on their final placement). The amount of autonomous work that the nurse can contribute to the practice (under the supervision of the nurse mentor) will depend on their year of study at the time of the placement. Practices not already accredited to be nurse training practices are supported by the respective university to accommodate a student nurse. Nurse mentors are required by the NMC to be approved for their mentorship role. Lewisham CEPN will organise as much of this as possible to support the practice. What are the benefits of hosting an undergraduate nurse?
Hosting an undergraduate general nurse is a proven method of influencing their decision to become practice nurses and, crucially, of keeping them in Lewisham once they have qualified. Smaller practices can share a nurse placement with neighbouring practices, giving them the same opportunity to influence workforce development as larger practices enjoy. Practices are reimbursed £75 per week per student to cover the mentor’s time with them. The mentor, a nurse already working in the practice, benefits from a new skills set and has the opportunity of either undertaking an accredited university course in mentorship, which can contribute to CPD and revalidation requirements, or of having previous mentoring experience (and updates) taken into account. The insight that Lewisham’s existing practice nurses can impart to students, both in terms of their clinical experience and of managing the complexities of general practice nursing, cannot be underestimated. Lewisham can grow its own practice nurses to be the best!
